Learn the appropriate instructional strategies and techniques to address the needs of students with exceptionalities with a Master of Science in Exceptional Student Education from Barry University. This 100 percent online program is designed for working professionals—with or without teaching experience—who want to work with K-12 children and youth with mild disabilities, both academic and behavioral, inside or outside of public schools.

In the accelerated online program, you will learn how to identify language development and communication deficits, study appropriate curriculum designs based on federal laws, appropriation, and staffing, and explore individualized education programs. You will also analyze the various forms of classroom organization, behavior management, and communication skills appropriate for managing the spectrum of students with exceptionalities.

Taught by the same distinguished faculty who teach on campus, the online MS ESE curriculum can be completed in as few as 18 months. The program is closely aligned with the Florida Exceptional Student Education Competencies and Skills and includes the following competency areas:

Courses

Courses for the Master of Science in Exceptional Student Education online program are aligned with the Florida Department of Education (FDOE) special education teacher licensure and classification. The following 12 courses are required:

This course explores major research designs and methods emphasizing underlying assumptions, inquiry aims, participant selection, data collection and analysis, interpretation of findings, conclusions, and reporting.

This course analyzes the various forms of classroom organization, behavior management, and communication skills appropriate for managing the spectrum of students with exceptionalities. Prerequisite: supervised experience.

This course identifies language development and communication deficits as well as select appropriate methods of instruction to meet individual student needs across educational settings.

Duration: 7 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

This course evaluates the special needs of students with exceptionalities in the areas of employability skills, career awareness, and transition planning for adult living. Prerequisite: field experience.

Duration: 7 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

This course surveys instructional techniques for teaching children with learning disabilities, including specialized approaches in basic skills and adaptation of curriculum materials. Prerequisite: supervised field experience.

This course surveys instructional strategies for teaching students who are identified as having emotional handicaps, including instructional techniques, motivational strategies, development, implementation, and evaluation of individualized education plans as well as data base management. Prerequisite: supervised field experience.

This course presents an overview of the physical, mental, emotional, and social exceptionalities in children, as well as their educational and social implications. Prerequisite: field experience.

This course proposes educational assessment techniques and procedures to provide an objective data base for individualizing instruction for children with exceptionalities. Prerequisite: field experience.

This course concentrates on current programming practices and the development of appropriate learning environments for students with disabilities, including all resources within the continuum of services beyond the classroom. The different models, trends, and issues related to collaboration, inclusion, diversity, and mentoring of students with exceptionalities are explored.

This course explores the history of autism as well as neurological, cognitive, and environmental theories. Coursework will focus on the educational characteristics of students with ASD and describes the social interaction, social communication, and academic needs of students with ASD. Students will also study issues of identification and referral to special education. Prerequisite: a minimum of 8 hours field experience.

This course surveys strategies appropriate for students with ASD—particularly the use of assistive and instructional technology—as well as natural, alternative, and augmentative communication systems. Prerequisite: a minimum of 8 hours field experience.

This course examines and evaluates curriculum models, including the administration of instructional systems and curriculum materials necessary for students with disabilities. Appropriate curriculum designs based on federal laws, appropriation, staffing, and Individualized Education programs will be explored. This course provides foundational information and competencies regarding the nature and needs of students with mild disabilities. Prerequisite: field experience.

  • Bachelor’s degree (does not need to be in education) from a regionally accredited institution
  • No teaching experience required
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • GRE waiver with 3.0 GPA on undergraduate transcript (if under 3.0, provisional admittance pending receipt of GRE/MAT)
    • No minimum GRE/MAT score required
  • Professional resume with current professional references OR two letters of recommendation
  • Statement of purpose essay integrated into the online application
